Instead
of lounging around our hotel before check-in time, we decided to visit our
first attraction nearby. The War Memorial of Korea is located in Yongsan,
approximately a 10 minute walk from base. We spent a couple hours here, but one
could easy spend three or four hours browsing through the numerous exhibitions learning about military history and honoring the many fallen heroes. The
highlight of the visit was at the end when we thought our customized tour was
complete but exited the building and saw a large gathering of people scattered
across the front steps. We had no idea what was happening or about to occur.
Later we learned that at 2:00 pm every Friday there is a parade show held in
front of the War Memorial. It consisted of various military personnel, mascots,
traditional costumes, and a spectacular performance by various military
personnel that is comparable to that of the Silent Drill Team from 8th
& I in Washington, D.C. The jaw-dropping movements done with bayoneted
rifles twirled and tossed will leave you speechless! We had the pleasure of
ending our day at the War Memorial by taking a photo with the R.O.K. Marines of
Korea. Such a treat!
