Temples of Angkor: Part 1 of 3

ANGKOR WAT

Angkor is an important historical site in Southeast Asia. It consists of many temples that were built by kings of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 14th century. The number one reason tourists visit Siem Reap is for the temples. There are dozens of them throughout Siem Reap, though the majority are clustered close to the city center. The iconic temple of Angkor Wat is the main beauty that people travel from all over the world to see. And why not? It is a World Wonder. The smaller temples of Angkor scattered across the city are also well worth the visit.

After the fall of the Khmer Empire, the temples were abandoned and later ruined by the Khmer Rouge. While visiting each site I couldn’t believe we were actually there, climbing through temples that were over 900 years old. It was a bit surreal. The beauty of each temple is found in its detailed carvings and inscriptions. The pictures only reflect a miniscule portion of the sacred ancient ruins.

Instead of telling the stories of the temples, I think I will let the temples tell their own stories. Enjoy!
